Summer in the Black Forest

A well-signposted network of trails leads adventurers of all ages to the most beautiful spots around the Feldberg. Those looking for a more active holiday will find a wide range of designated Nordic walking routes as well as varied cycling trails for mountain bikes and e-bikes.

The health resort of Feldberg is home to Baden-Württemberg’s largest and oldest nature reserve, including the glacial lake Feldsee. Since 2001, the nature reserve has been managed by the Southern Black Forest Nature Conservation Centre (Naturschutzzentrum Südschwarzwald), located in the House of Nature (Haus der Natur), where visitors can learn more about the region’s unique wildlife, landscapes, and conservation efforts.

Lake Feldsee

Covering approximately 97,500 m² and reaching depths of up to 32 m, Lake Feldsee was formed by glaciers during the last Ice Age. It is the largest cirque lake in the Black Forest and is surrounded on three sides by steep rock walls rising up to 300 m. The lake has a diameter of around 350 to 370 meters.

Hikers are drawn here by the premium hiking trail “Feldberg-Steig”, leading to the “roof of the Black Forest.” For families, the nature discovery trail “Wichtelpfad im Auerhahnwald” is highly recommended.

A great starting point for scenic high-altitude hikes is the mountain station of the Feldberg cable car at 1,450 meters. From the viewing platform on the eleventh floor of the Feldberg Tower, you can enjoy breathtaking views across the peaks, all the way to the Vosges and even the Alps. Along the way, numerous mountain huts offer opportunities to rest and enjoy regional food and refreshments.

Lake Schluchsee

Located in the heart of the Hochschwarzwald at an altitude of 930 m above sea level, Lake Schluchsee is 7.5 km long and up to 1.5 km wide. With a surface area of 5.14 km² and a depth of 62 m, it is the largest lake in the Black Forest and also the largest lake in Baden-Württemberg.

As the water sports centre of the Black Forest, Lake Schluchsee has been one of the cleanest bathing lakes in Germany for many years. The beautiful landscape around the lake offers wonderful hiking and biking routes. A true paradise for hikers, water sports enthusiasts, and many more.
